| A former Gigs Unlimited 'Band Of The Month', you'd be forgiven for thinking Shouting Myke are a flavour of punk that fizzles and flattens. Absolutely, catastrophically and thankfuck-ily, they are not.
'Spectator To Love' sees the punk of tomorrow being lacerated with flip-knife guitars of pure metal and expertly bandaged by intelligent vocals not unlike Alkaline Trio's Matt Skiba in tone and Tool's Maynard James Keenan in unflawed power. An unpredictable 5 minutes, this opening track fragments into a hundred beautiful pieces of heart and mind for the breakdown, only to boomerang back to the source for an awesome finale.
'Only Someone' opens with a delicate, sliding melody that quickly escalates into crystal punk fury. Completely unconventional to the style, a finger melting solo remains in the mix rather than taking centre stage. Shouting Myke are going to do this their way, and you're going to be surprised to find that their way works.
'Can't Move You' is possibly the standout track on an unfaltering record. Addictively intriguing and with masses of depth, this track has the cerebral atmosphere of Tool hovering about a true punk tornado of compassion and wisdom. There's even room for the finer points of Hell Is For Heroes through voice and strings. Again, unpredictability is a feature, 'Can't Move You' experiencing unexpected shifts in tone and pace that are trademark to prog metal yet manage to meld perfectly into the Shouting Myke mix.
4th track 'Medusa' differs greatly from its predecessors. The drums have disappeared, the guitars are taking a backseat and the fury is repressed. This is the ghost of Shouting Myke. Breathy, exhaling vocals hang wraith-like over a twinkling, starlit xylophone melody, creating a warm yet eerie Danny Elfman style atmosphere. Unfortunately this ethereal soundscape is the shortest song on 'For Your Pleasure' but easily the most mysterious.
'Paycheques and Poetry' resurrects the dead-and-suspended-in-the-afterlife-for-4 minutes band, chugging, muted guitars exploding into an infinitely superior chorus. No clichés for this band. Another worthy solo rides intricate layers of uncountable styles. Punk, art, hardcore, metal, prog-it's all here and if you consider yourself a fan of MUSIC you have to hear this band. Innovative, intelligent and kicking your ass.
