With more ambition than a Terry Wogan golf putt (he holds the record for the longest putt ever televised … don’t ask…), emerge a group of lads that are surely too young to be this progressive! Apparently not, for what we have here, is three blasts of progressive melodic rock – a sort of Rush meets Indie – and my, oh my it’s very good.

A cursory glance at these whippersnappers and you’d bet your right nipple that you weren’t going to be hearing gradually surmounting metal riffs faultlessly combined with intricate instrumentals and crisp vocals. And I have to tell you, that you’d be a right nipple worse off – this is surprisingly complex stuff and yet never does it give the impression of being over done. The balance of multifarious melodies with simpler ones is handled to perfection.

EP opener “Drowning Man” reminds me of the most unlikely of bands - with elements of Space, Pink Floyd and Iron Maiden somehow swirling together and not creating a fourteen minute epic about Tom Jones’ courageous stand at the battle of Agincourt. Somehow, the band has managed to draw on older musical styles and contemporised them with punchy musicianship and modern vocals and not end up in a mess.

Elixir are one of the best unsigned acts I’ve heard in a long time, in fact, they’re the prog’s bollocks.
